Today is my birthday

Today marks the 42th year of my life. When you get to my age, you’d be less than thrilled, but the darn things come around every year anyway.SmileyCentral.com

Everyone who loves me tells me I don’t look forty-two, whatever that means. I’ll take it as a compliment. Yesterday when I got my family for lunch together I didn't mention about my birthday at all, and they seemed not to remember it either despite the cake that was being presented as a dessert. I invited them quite often they thought it was just another lunch with me...LOL! But my youngest sister sent me a birthday text message five days ago though. She thought it was on Feb 20. Well, there's a mixed up birth date between me and my younger sister, I, but the two of us know our real birthdays. Today she and her daughter, L, sent me a picture b'day message. So I'll count my blessings, enjoy the days and the year. SmileyCentral.com

A year has passed

Time has slipped away and today marks 1 year to the very date of Fatso crossing over to Rainbow Bridge. I miss him as much as I did the last day I saw him. He taught me to be patient, tolerant, more understanding and he gave me an appreciation for all living things, by loving and caring for him. I still have many pictures of him on my computer and my cellphone. I know that he is in a much better place ... heart disease free, and chasing all the birds and cats in a big garden up there in heaven.
I now have Suneo the cat and he gives me joys too. I admit that I was afraid at first that it was an insult to get a cat knowing how much Fatso disliked cats. Well he didn't really hate them but he loved chasing them out of his territory. Thank you Fatso for being in my life. I just want to let you know that you will always be in my thoughts and you will be loved forever and always missed.

Lots of XXXOOOXXXOOOXXXOOO

A blast from the past

The above image is my late parents wedding invitation. I found it in one of photo album stored in a wooden drawer at our house in Lampung, Sumatra. This invitation is almost 50 years old now, printed in 1958 in a simple white stenciled paper. The wording on the invitation was written in an old style of Indonesian language. Here is the translation in English :

Mrs. Liem Soen Tiong (widow), requests the honour of your presence on Sunday, the 9th of March 1958 which falls on 20 Tjia Gwee (the 20th day of Chinese calendar), at the marriage of our 4th daughter :

Liem Kim Nio (Mally) and Thio Oen Tjoan

We kindly request a little bit of your valuable time to attend a small celebration at no. 30 Keradjinan Street (Gg. Sekolah Tukang) at 10.00am to 14.00pm---as of the customs that time, reception immediately following ceremony---. We sincerely thank you and look forward to your presence.

A little note to my non-Indonesian friends. In Indonesia if you were born to a Chinese descent family, it is a compulsory to have both Chinese name and Indonesian altogether in your personal documents. There are two kind of Chinese in Indonesia. The first, called "Cina Peranakan", who are locally born Chinese (like both of my parents and grandparents), they have mix-married with native Indonesians and speak Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language). The other one are known as "Cina Totok", they are migrants who continue to speak Chinese, some able to speak a bit of Indonesian Language. Both categories as Chinese.

To me, I consider myself 100% Indonesian as I do not know how to speak Chinese and I have very little knowledge of Chinese culture. The only thing I appreciate highly from the Chinese are their hard working attitude and their culinary. Other than that I am truly an Indonesian.

7 months later

Today is the 7 months anniversary of the passing of my beloved dog, Fatso. In case you missed it, here's what I wrote about all that a couple of months ago. Even now, it's hard to believe he has left this earth, or whatever it is that happens to dogs when they die. I will NEVER get over the absence of his in my life. He can never be replaced even though there is a cat in my live that is helping me deal with his loss. Well Fatso never liked cats, in fact he loved to chase them - what dogs don't?? ...He was territorial (a defense mechanism from his days as a stray), and he barked at larger dogs. However, he was also extremely loyal, could walk down busy streets off lead and stopped when asked to, and he was easy to be around. He never bit anyone, nor did he ever show the least bit of aggression unless he felt threatened (he once started a fight with a big dog in the neighborhood that made me screamed and threw slipper to his opponent, I think my voice scared off his enemy ...LOL!). He was the perfect dog and I loved him with my whole heart. Thank you Fatso, you were the best friend a person could ever ask for. Below is a poem I found from the net in memory of Fatso :

In My Heart

I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too.
I think of you in silence. I often speak your name.
Now all I have is memories, and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is my keepsake, with which I’ll never part.
God has you in his keeping.
I have you in my heart.

A time to remember

how can you not love this face?

...best friends forever

There are moments when I still feel you're with me but I have to remind myself that dogs do not live as long as people do. I am here and you are up there, things were changing and now we are miles apart. I missed the little things you'd do. The sound of your feet on the floor, the way you looked at me when you knew I munched the food that you like, the wag of your tail, the touch of your smooth, soft coat. But life goes on and makes new memories, memories to smile over and revel in. And I will always think of you as my best friend in the whole wide world, no matter where you are and what I'm doing. Sleep well sweet baby ...

Five thirty

I was so dreading going for a walk this morning. I had set the goal of walking for half an hour everyday, but the hardest part was getting up early. When Fatso was still alive I had a drive to wake up early every morning, sometimes he would wake me up, or I just knew his presence and I would immediately get ready to take him out for his morning walk. We always went out at 5:30AM or a little later to that ... so we could enjoy fresh air and there were not too many vehicles going our ways.

After putting it off for more than four weeks, I finally did. And I walked for 30 minutes. Then I ran for ten minutes. Walk again for another ten minutes and I kept this up for an hour with the trip back home.

I thought to myself, "If I could just keep this good habit everyday, I might not need to go for the acupuncture every week." The acupuncturist told me the cheapest way to ease the pain of my recurrence adenomyosis is by taking a walk minimum half an hour everyday.

Funny how lonely I'm feeling this morning as I passed all the roads Fatso and I used to take. My feet are not sore but my heart is of burning pain. I hope I can get through it.

My best friend Fatso

IN LOVING MEMORY "FATSO" (1994 - 2007)

Image hosting

Fatso was my adorable & beloved dog, my faithful friend for 11 years. He passed away last month, on February 4, 2007 because of the stress and the congestive heart failure during the flood in Jakarta. He struggled with the heart murmur condition for the last 2 years but he never would let it slow him down. It still hurts not having him with me now, but I cherish the wonderful memories of our years together. He has meant more to me then almost any human I know. Here is the tribute for Fatso that I wrote on March 4, 2007.

Quick bio : mutt (I think he looked like a Pekingese but his built resembles to a Tibetan Spaniel).

Likes : walks, plays and eats!

Pet peeves : thunderstorms, rains, fireworks, loud explosive sounds, a visit to the Vet.

Favorite food : “Purina” begging strips original flavor, or anything that get slipped to him when the human in his life eat!

Favorite walk : anywhere and I didn’t have to worry about the leash!

Best habit : not peeing in the house.

Best tricks : Fatso specialty was throwing himself on the floor and rolling over when he seeked some attentions or refuse to go home from his walks, this could happen anytime and anywhere. He also liked to fetch the small rock that you found on the street and threw it as far as possible for him to catch. If we played them at home…I normally tapped the rock on the floor and the sound got him excited and he would try to grab the rock from your hand. He often chased me around the house trying to get the rock.

The Story :

Today it has been one month since I last held my sweet boy, Fatso. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him. I am still reminded of that day on top of the running big truck trying to get him out of the flood area to a friend’s house. I thought that he would pull through knowing that he was a fighter. The sight of him lifeless made me feel guilty for not evacuating earlier. I watched him draw his final slow breath with my tears wetting on his fur. I would never have believed the pain could be so bad for me, but in the end he did not suffer for long. February 4, 2007 truly was the saddest day of my life. I cannot even bring myself to wash the blankie he peed in my bedroom when I tried to catch some sleep (Fatso always peed outside all of his life), in the early hours. When I finally washed it down two days ago, I told Fatso that he could visit me in my dream if he wants his blankie back. Sometimes I find myself looking for him, hoping that he was just hidden away or slept in his favorite spot, somewhere in the house.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw him. It was one Sunday afternoon in May or June 1996 when he came out of nowhere in between the gate, his small head popped in as if to welcome me as I was new at the neighborhood that time. I thought he was a stray and named him Choky (for chocolate) even though I later found out that he belong to a neighbor a few block away from my place. When he didn’t come back for several days, I was so worry and looked for him all over the neighborhood. I found him in a house a few blocks away from my place. Fatso was so excited to see me but he was on leashed on a pole inside the terrace. His movement was only as long as the leash. I then decided to talk to the the lady who owned the house about Fatso. Her teenager son was there and told me that Fatso was belong to him. The young man was upset when I told him I would like to adopt Fatso if they let me. I learned he just liked to have a dog but not to take care of them, and they also had another 2 poodles besides Fatso. After a long discussion they finally agreed to give Fatso to me on one condition!!! I could not change his given name “Fatso” and that the little brat was 2 years old by that time. So that’s where I got his name, Fatso. He was a thinso rather than a fatso when I first met him, I think. Fatso was so grateful to be released from his leash and followed me home. I am so glad that his previous owner gave him away to me (they don't know what they missed). Since then we were inseparable..

Fatso truly was my best friend. Being that I am not from Jakarta and don’t have any family here it should come as no surprise that I spent a tremendous amount of time with him. He was there during the good times and the bad. He never judged me or hurt me and all he ever wanted from me was love. He was just such a loveable dog. He was a pleasure to be around and many people loved him. One thing he was especially good at was making friend. He was adored by kids, adults and had many four legged friends in the neighborhood. He has had a heart murmur disease for the last 2 years but otherwise was in good shape. He walked 2 or 3 times a day, he still liked to chase cats around, he was very energetic. There are no words to express how much I love him. And how much I hate that at the end of his life it seemed like everything went wrong for him.

I guess I haven’t quite figured out how to say good-bye to him because I don’t want to say it. I miss him everyday more than others until one day, my 10 years old niece, Lindsey sent me a text message. She wrote :
“Auntie, please don’t be sad, I know Fatso doesn’t really want to leave you and the world too. Don’t worry … you will see him one day, and that day will be soon. ps : I saw a rainbow during sunset today, I think Fatso was running up and down having a great time with all his new friends. Goodnight, Lindsey and Mom.”

Thank you Fatso for being my best companion and sharing your life with me for 11 wonderful years. Thank you so much for all the love, protection, loyalty, friendship, and the laughs you gave me to treasure. Thank you for making my life better. I miss rubbing your belly, taking long walks together, playing rough house, I miss you sneaking in my bedroom when I was asleep, but most of all I miss you in my life. I know that you are out of pain now and back being to your young spectacular self, running, playing and chasing all the cats or birds you meet up there. Never forget that I love you with all my heart and more. Always remember the good times we had together. I hope I will see you again someday. In the meantime ... keep your tail wagging!
